Just kidding, why would we even want to? holidays are a time for the family, for enjoying quality time and getting to know each other even better than you already do. A camping holiday with your children is ideal for many families.
It keeps the children busy, the parents happy, and ensures everyone gets a dose of fresh air. Avoid letting your kids spend hours behind the television or ipad, and get them interested in nature and stretching their legs. One of our top tips for packing for a family holiday is to use packing cubes. They are a game changer and they also make van life with kids so much easier. They are so handy in the van too when the kids don’t have their own set of drawers. You can get packing cubes in different colours and we make sure the boys have a different colour cube so they know which one is theirs without opening it. This makes it much easier for them to find their clothes and get dressed themselves. 3 Be ready for travel days
Our daughter jade was 15 when we started travelling full-time. She’d already spent about 5 years living on a boat with us, and a few months travelling europe in the motorhome during school holidays. We decided to home-school her for her last year of high school as she was struggling in school and on track to fail all of her gcses. We hoped that by giving her extra time and attention, she’d be able to improve her grades and pass her exams enough to get into college. Which (spoiler alert) she did- she went from e’s and f’s on her mocks to getting a*, a, a b and two cs and sailed into her preferred college.
Campervanning with kids is loads of fun! most kids love it and will see this as an awesome adventure, especially if they are new to camping. You may want to choose a more comfortable mid to high range campervan if you are new to camping with kids, simply to give you more space and features. Slower travel tends to be best with kids, no matter the type of holiday. Being mindful that they are seeing so many new things and having new experiences, so you want to give them extra downtime. Overstimulated kids aren’t fun on holidays! you can give them some input into what you see and do too, getting them involved in the planning.
All but the very youngest child can be involved in the planning. Encourage kids to find about new zealand with books and websites. Let them help choose the activities – maybe something special like whale watching, volcano climbing or feeding lambs. Attractions don’t have to be pricey theme events. Natural wonders like a black sand beach or bubbling mud will capture children’s imagination.
